Synopsis

Africa in the Global South: Advancing Agency, Amplifying Voices is the product of a conference held at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, in January 2024, convened to examine the Non-Aligned Movement and Group of 77 (G77) summits. An initiative of the University of the Witwatersrand’s African Agency Towards Global Powers project, the book analyses Africa in the Global South from multiple perspectives, rejecting the received wisdom that the Global South is a homogeneous geopolitical bloc. Its interdisciplinary approach aims to deepen our understanding, appreciation and contemplation of Africa in the Global South. If African agency in the Global South is to be enhanced, amplifying African voices through knowledge production is essential. The contributors are established and emerging researchers, and the twelve chapters range from theoretical conceptualisations to specifi c economic, cultural, social, technological, geopolitical and health issues.
