This book, Social Work Practice in Mental Health and Advancing Recovery-Oriented Practice in a South African Context, represents a significant scholarly evolution from its inception as a doctoral study conducted in 2017 in the Limpopo Province. While rooted in empirical research, the work has since transcended its original scope to encompass a broader framework for professional practice. The conceptual foundations and practical insights presented herein are drawn from developing and implementing a tailored programme designed to support social workers operating within hospitals, mental health institutions, and the Department of Social Development. To date, there is a notable paucity of literature addressing the interface between social work and recovery-oriented mental health practice in South Africa. I sincerely hope that this volume will serve as a valuable resource for students, practitioners, policymakers, and scholars and will contribute meaningfully to embedding the social work perspective within global discourses on recoveryoriented mental health care.
